Saint Bernard
Saint Bernard is an excellent rescue dog. These dogs are self confident and stay alert all the time making them an excellent choice for guard dog. When they are with their family, then they are really very protective for them. They like to be loved by their family members and love to spend time with them. They are intelligent so they are very easy to train but you must start their training in young age due to their protective nature. They are calm and friendly by nature but whenever you go outside to public places with them, then you must keep them in leash because sometimes they can be rash and aggressive with other dogs and animals.
Saint Bernard are also called Alpine Mastiff. They belong to Switzerland actually. Saint Bernard dog belongs to working breed group and especially this breed is developed with the hope that they are going to help to rescue. Keeping in mind their rescue reputation, Bernadine Monks have been raising Saint Bernard for rescue since 16th Century.
- Height: Saint Bernard is a giant sized dog and really gives fascinating impression. Saint Bernard male is usually 27 – 30 inches tall while Saint Bernard female is 24 – 27 inches tall in height.
- Weight: They are tall as well as bulky. Normally, a male Saint Bernard weighs from 150 – 200 lb while female Saint Bernard has from 110 – 160 lb of weight.
- Colour: Saint Bernard breed is available in white with red or red with white colour combination and brindle marking with white colour.
- Temperament: Saint Bernard is an attention craving, tolerate, self confident and friendly dog by nature.
They are very dedicated to their family and ready to do whatever they need to please their family. It is proved that they love to please their family and like to be affectionate with them. They love children but due to their huge size need to be watched closely as even nice good natured affection could be too rough for children. So avoid them to love and play with tiny kids.
Saint Bernard has a huge skull and wrinkles above the eyes that become more visible when they are alert. They have black nose and black lips. Their ears are of round and rectangular shape. They have almond shape dark eyes set deep apart away from each other. These dogs have very strong and heavy tail having minor curve at the end. Their legs are very strong and straight having wide paws. Saint Bernard are available in two species. One is short coat and other one is long coat. Short coat usually have short looks and smooth hair while long coat give rough appearance and have long fur.
Common health problems in Saint Bernard are elbow and hip dysplasia, heart problem, bloat, skin problem and eye problems. Saint Bernard can live successfully in apartments but with some routine exercise. Like other giant sized dogs, they are also messy while eating.
