Maltese

The Maltese are brave, vigorous and playful dogs. They are calm, affectionate, trusting and loyal with their owner. They are very loving and good humored with a high degree of talent. They get lot of affections and become very close to their owner and families and are outstanding with children. These jolly dogs are very friendly and get along with everyone including people, dogs, cats and other pets. They love to roam around people. They are highly intelligent and good at learning tricks if they are satisfactorily rewarded. Maltese is a classical companion dog. They have very graceful appearance and lovable too. They are bold and quick to alert their master in case of doubtful noises. Maltese are good watch dogs. They alert you when a visitor arrives, but quickly welcome the guest once they see you welcoming them. Maltese love to play outdoors but jumping in puddles is their burning desire. They can be irritable with coxcomb children and may be difficult to control. Sometimes they are fussy eaters. Include small biscuits and dry dog food in their regular diet to help the teeth stay strong and healthy.

Maltese is an ancient dog. This breed was developed by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus belonging to Malta. Some people say that this lively little dog was brought to England for the first time by Crusaders while they were returning home from the Mediterranean. The breed became mainly popular with women, who usually carried them in their sleeves and even to their beds. Today, the fascinating Maltese is a very famous dog, is preferred as a pet and for dog shows.

The Maltese is a resilient little buddy dog with a luxurious silky white coat hanging straight to the ground on each side of a center part line. They have single coat and have not any undercoat. They should not be wavy and curly. Their coat should be made of shiny, thick, heavy hair which are 8 inches long. They come in pure white colour, though light ivory colour is also satisfactory. They have dark, large and rounded eyes set deep with dark rims. Their long hanging ears and tail are completely covered with thick hair. Their body is longer as compared to their length. Maltese male are 8 – 10 inches tall while Maltese female are 9 inches tall. Usually, Maltese can gain around about 6 – 9 lb weight. Their life span is up to 19 years.

The most common diseases in Maltese are respiratory problems, eye problems, sun burn and teeth problems. Daily combing and brushing of the long coat is important but be mild, as they have very soft coat. Clean their ears and pull out hair growing inside the ear canal. The eyes should be checked regularly and cleaned if essential.
