Great Dane
Great Dane is one of the best dog breeds developed by Germans. It is also called German Mastiff and Deutsche Doggy. Great Dane is characterized as great companion, guard, working and watch dog. This German dog was used in the middle ages as war dog and large mammal hunter. Great Dane was known as “Apollo” of dogs due to their ability to overtake strong and large mammals. Great Dane is such a brave and sturdy dog breed. They are very friendly with their owners especially with children.
Today, people love to have them in their homes as pets because of their loving nature. They also provide protection to their family. Great Dane is basically a dig dog and has impressive appearance. Great Dane belongs to working breed group of dogs.
- Height: As they are large in size, so Great Dane male is usually 30 – 34 inches tall in height while female is normally 28 – 32 inches tall. Their height adds great impression to their looks.
- Weight: Normally male Great Dane has weight between 120 – 200 lb while female Great Dane has between 100 – 130 lb weight.
- Colour: Great Dane breed has developed many coat colours. Most common coat colours are brindle, black, mantle, fawn, blue and harlequin.
Great Dane is very loving, courageous, dependable and active by nature and has a high resistance to provocation without aggression. His life span is near about 7 to 10 years.
They are very good with children but not too tiny children due to their large size.
Stately, gentle, affectionate, elegant and strong are the words to define a Great Dane. They are always friendly and lovable. They like to be around people and enjoy playing with them yet spirited and brave. Great Dane’s head gives chiseled appearance. They have dark deep set eyes of medium size. Their ears are set high and folded forward. Usually, they have black coloured nose but in blue coloured coat breed they have blue – black nose. Great Dane has thick lips, short thick coat and long narrowing tail.
Great Dane is a great guard and watch dog. They alert their owner about the presence of stranger but don’t bark unless they need to alert someone. So they don’t spoil your restful life with their barking. As they have short life span, so the reason is this that they are plagued with several severe problems as compared to other breeds such as dysplasia, arthritis, tumor, tail injuries and heart problems. Today, Great Dane breed is used for many purposes like they are used as companion dog, hunting dog, working dog and body guard.
