Dachshund

The Dachshund is an energetic and muscular dog with tiny legs. It carries itself proudly and has a smart appearance. They are inquisitive and naughty. They are very intelligent and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the the owner to train. There are three species of Dachshund which have been developed, the short haired, the wired haired, and the long haired. Dachshunds are devoted to their families. Some Dachshunds' owners say that long haired is calmer and cooler than the other two species. The wired haired specie is more outgoing and clown like. All are slightly complex to train. They are very good with old people, kind with children and are fairly protective of them. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are commonly happy with other pets. However, they can be jealous, ill tempered and very quick to bite. These little dogs like to bark but their barking is surprisingly loud for their size. Sometimes they refuse to be handled and love to roam freely. Dachshund gain weight quickly, so feed them lightly.

Dachshund belongs to hound breed group and originated from Germany about 100 years ago. They are very friendly and very fast hunting dogs. Dachshund breed was developed for the hunting the animals actually. Dachshunds have several terrier characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have rich history in fox hunting.


Dachshund has a lengthened head and a minor curved skull, healthy jaws with non pendent lips, a long muzzle, domed and overhanging eyebrows, and a strong bite with extremely strong canine teeth. Dachshunds usually have 42 teeth. Their ears are movable and are hanging down long with cheeks. Their eyes are dark red egg shaped depending on the coat colour with a vigorous and friendly expression. His tail is carried in line with his back.

  • Height: There are three sizes of Dachshund’s available now a day. Normal size is usually 14 – 18 inches tall, Miniature height is normally up to 14 inches while toy size is up to 12 inches tall.
  • Weight: Commonly Dachshund breeds have around 8 lbs of weight. But don’t over feed them as they gain weight quickly.
  • Colour: There are variations in Dachshund’s colour patterns. The short haired Dachshund's coat should be shiny, smooth and standardized. Solid colored Dachshunds may be tan or yellow. Bicolor Dachshunds may be deep black, brown, or gray. There are also piebald, speckle streaked, or harlequin varieties available.

Dachshund breed can live comfortably in apartments. They don’t need yards to play. But they need near about 90 minutes walk daily to be active and healthy as they get bulky quickly. Common health problems in Dachshund breed are heart diseases, diabetes, spinal dick problem and urinary tract problems.
