Australian Shepherd

Australian Shepherd is an active and family loving breed of dogs. They can be destructive if they don’t do some exercise daily. Australian Shepherd is famous about their laid back, friendly nature. They really love to play with kids and are loyal with your family. They do as much as they can to protect their family. Australian Shepherd is an intelligent breed. They are always willing to please their family members and they understand what their owner want them to do. Naturally they are aggressive but too work oriented when they are working. Your family must enjoy Australian Shepherd’s company. It will be a fun time to play with them. It looks very attractive when your dog follows you while you are on walk either alone or with your family.

Australian Shepherd was introduced in United States during 18th Century as a sheep herding dog. Australian Shepherd belongs to herding breed group. Normally Australian Shepherd male has a height from 20 – 23 inches and female is from 18 – 21 inches tall, their weight is from 70 – 90 lb and from 50 – 70 lb respectively. Usually, they are in following colours

  • Blue merle
  • Black
  • Red merle
  • Red with or without markings of tan

Australian Shepherd is considered to be an active, intelligent and friendly dog by nature.
Australian Shepherd’s origin was Pyrenees Mountains, afterwards they reached in Australia. They have almond shape eyes with solid shade or combination of brown, blue and merle. Their ears are of rectangular shape and slump afterwards when they give attention to something. They have straight docked tail. Their legs are very strong and straight in shape. They have coat with medium length of fur but it prevents them from climatic affects and provides water resistance. Australian Shepherd suffers from some major diseases like hip and elbow dysplasia and other depending on the cot colour of dog. They get blind or deaf due to defects in their spinal system. Some environmental illness may occur but can be fixed and control with some prevention. Australian Shepherd is not suitable for apartment’s lifestyle because daily exercise is necessary for them to keep them active and healthy. Today, this breed is still used for sheep herding as well as a friendly dog.
